Elected Officials
Mayor
Dr. Irene H. Brodie, a long-time resident of Robbins, served twelve years as Village Clerk before running for Mayor. She is the first woman mayor and has held the office for nineteen years - longer than any mayor in the history of Robbins. Her primary reason for being Mayor has always been to help the Village of Robbins progress and to help the children of Robbins receive college support. Dr. Brodie is a long-time educator and administrator in Robbins’ schools. She was a sixth grade teacher at Thomas J. Kellar School, and later, both sixth grade teacher and assistant principal at Turner School in Robbins. Later, she taught high school English at Richards High School in Oak Lawn. She was later recruited by the board of Moraine Valley Community College to help write curriculum, test students for admission eligibility, and teach courses she created for the newly formed college. After being a professor for two years, she became a director of the programs she created. She became an academic dean as the programs expanded. Following her retirement at Moraine, the college named a section of the B Building, “Dr. Irene H. Brodie Center”. In 2002, she was “US Region V Benefactor to Moraine Valley Community College”.
Dr. Brodie has been a member of Great Hope Baptist Church in Robbins since 1955. She also enjoys visiting many of the other churches in Robbins.
Dr. Brodie holds three degrees: Bachelor of Education from Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University); Master of Science from the University of Chicago; Doctor of Education from Northeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Dr. Brodie has extensive political experience and numerous political ties with officials at all levels of government. These relationships have helped Robbins receive favorable treatment over the years. Some of her accomplishments include:
- Elected a vice-president of the Illinois Municipal League.
- Elected executive board member and assistant secretary of National Conference of Black Mayors.
- Appointed chair of education committee and scholarship committee for the National Conference of Black Mayors.
