Welcome to the Village of Robbins, Illinois!
As Mayor of Robbins, I welcome you to our web site. I have been Mayor of Robbins for nineteen years and am extremely proud of our town. Robbins is a small, quiet town, located approximately fifteen miles south of Chicago. It is a Village that has a great history and a promising future.
Robbins was incorporated on December 14, 1917. It is the oldest all-black governed incorporated town in the northern United States. In 1930, Robbins became the home of the first black airport ever built in the United States. The airport and its flight school for African Americans flourished until 1933, when a violent windstorm destroyed the hanger and the three airplanes inside. Robbins is also the home town of many celebrities, including Dwyane Wade – star of Miami Heat basketball team, Keke Palmer – lead actress of hit movie “Akeelah and the Bee”, Mr. T (Lawrence Tero) – star of the television series “The A Team”, and Nichelle Nichols – actress who played Lieutenant Uhura on the long-running television series “Star Trek”.
Today, Robbins has approximately 6,636 residents and is growing everyday with the construction of new homes. The Village has experienced great progress during the last two decades, and I look forward to even more successes in the future. Robbins has much to offer its residents. With the city of Chicago nearby, our residents have access to many of Chicago’s cultural and recreational activities. Even closer to home, there are restaurants, retail shops, grocery stores, banks, a movie theater, home improvement stores, and much more along Pulaski Road and Cicero Avenue. There are also various forms of public transportation in Robbins, including Pace Bus and Metra train service. The Metra station located at 139th and Utica in Robbins was a flag stop, but has now been upgraded to include a warming station for riders. Metra is also creating a paved parking lot with spaces for ninety-seven vehicles. There are several medical facilities in the area, including the Robbins/Cook County Medical Clinic, which is conveniently located at 135th and Kedzie. In addition, Oak Forest Hospital and St. Francis Hospital are located just a few miles from Robbins.
As you can see, the Village of Robbins is a community with a great history and a promising future. Welcome to our town!
